Why I Am Running for Mayor

My name is Sue Fuchtman and I am running for Mayor of the City of Norfolk, Nebraska. Norfolk has been my life-long home, and home is pretty special to me. I believe in Norfolk.

I know we have a lot to brag about here - great choices in K-12 schools, excellent higher education opportunities, dedicated people with strong Midwestern values, good job opportunities, along with a small town's quality of life. As your Mayor, I will continue to develop our strengths and help Norfolk prosper.

I want Norfolk to be the kind of town where people want to stay and discover opportunities, but also to be the place to come back home to. My employer for over 25 years, the Day Companies, is in Norfolk today because the company's founders, wanting to return to family and friends and raise their children with Great Plains values, came back home bringing their business with them.

Now, as partner and President of that business, which really could be located anywhere in the United States, we recognize that our high caliber, loyal, and hard-working employees with outstanding Midwest ethics, allows small companies like ours to compete successfully in the world wide marketplace.

With that in mind, we need to keep our gifted young people here, providing encouragement and support while they build on their ideas and fulfill their dreams of success. Their ideas could create the next Day Companies, which 30 years ago was three people but now employs over 50. I know it can happen. I have experienced it.

We must continue to bring good jobs to Norfolk and I have the experience to do it. In my business, I work with many customers, ranging from small mom-and-pop enterprises to Fortune 500 companies, located all across the United States, convincing them to send their business to Norfolk. I want to make Norfolk prominent in Nebraska and the larger world.

I want to make Norfolk a place where people feel connected to the community and to the larger world. Our highways are in need of improvement and expansion if we are going to stay competitive and connected. As a community we need to support state senators working this issue until we find a way to make it happen. I will be the voice for Norfolk on these important matters.

I want to give our citizens a reason to feel good about their community and their place in it, by developing pride for our city. As the retail center of Northeast Nebraska and home to a thriving industrial community, I believe we have much to offer. I will work with area businesses and economic development organizations to create a plan to market our city for future growth.

Norfolk is a small town with big possibilities, but we must take care to coordinate our efforts. To be successful, we need to come together and find ways to pool our resources for the future growth of Norfolk. I will work to recruit and retain quality jobs, to improve our roads, and to give people a reason to come to our community. Most importantly, I will help make Norfolk their home, because home is pretty special to all of us.
